Blue False Indigo (Baptisia australis) is a long-lived herbaceous perennial native to parts of eastern and central North America. It is admired for its upright spikes of blue, pea-like flowers that rise above attractive blue-gray to blue-green foliage. The flowers generally appear from May through June, depending on local climate.

This ornamental perennial forms a substantial, bushy clump with sturdy stems and distinctive three-part leaves. After flowering, elongated seedpods may develop, adding seasonal texture to the plant. Blue False Indigo was recognized as the 2010 Perennial Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association.

Baptisia australis performs best in full sun to light partial shade and well-drained soil. Once established, it develops a deep root system and tolerates periods of dry weather. Its flowers attract bees and other pollinators, making it suitable for native plant gardens, perennial borders, meadow-style landscapes, and wildlife-friendly plantings.
