Summer Wine® Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Seward’) is a deciduous ornamental shrub admired for its rich burgundy-purple foliage, graceful arching branches, and clusters of delicate pinkish-white flowers. This colorful selection of eastern ninebark combines dark foliage with a naturally branching growth habit, making it suitable for foundation plantings, mixed shrub borders, informal hedges, and specimen gardens.
During late spring to early summer, Summer Wine® Ninebark produces rounded clusters of small, pinkish-white flowers that contrast beautifully with its deep burgundy leaves. The foliage provides ornamental color throughout the growing season, while the shrub's gently arching branches create an attractive, flowing silhouette. Its layered, peeling bark adds texture during winter after the leaves have fallen.
Summer Wine® Ninebark performs best in full sun to partial shade and adapts to a variety of well-drained garden soils. Full sun generally supports the richest foliage color. Once established, the shrub tolerates occasional dry conditions and provides seasonal interest in both traditional and contemporary landscapes. As a deciduous perennial, it naturally loses its leaves and enters dormancy during winter.
