Shadowland® ‘Empress Wu’ Hosta (Hosta ‘Empress Wu’) is a dramatic, shade-loving herbaceous perennial celebrated for its exceptionally large, deeply veined blue-green leaves and bold architectural foliage. This giant hosta cultivar creates a lush, tropical-looking effect in shaded landscapes while remaining a cold-hardy perennial. Its impressive foliage makes it a distinctive specimen for woodland gardens, shaded borders, foundation plantings, and large decorative outdoor containers.
The broad, heart-shaped leaves emerge in spring with attractive blue-green coloring and prominent veining. As the growing season progresses, the foliage forms a substantial, rounded mound with overlapping leaves that create a dense, layered appearance. Leaf color may gradually become greener as the season advances, depending on sunlight and growing conditions.
During summer, Empress Wu Hosta produces pale lavender to light violet flowers on upright stalks above the foliage. These bell-shaped blossoms add seasonal interest and may attract visiting pollinators. The plant performs best in partial to full shade and prefers fertile, consistently moist, well-drained soil. As an herbaceous perennial, it naturally dies back during winter and produces fresh foliage in spring.
Each order includes 1 live Shadowland® Empress Wu Hosta supplied in a 1-gallon nursery pot (G1).
